When Upromise families purchase a home through Century 21 Advisors, a portion of their closing dollars is deposited into a college savings account for the person or persons designated at the time of enrollment. This consumer benefit is capped at a maximum of $3,000. The statement of this cap is posted on the Upromise Website and is effective with referrals placed after September 12, 2002. The maximum referral fee that the office will pay on a Upromise lead will be $5405. The money doesn’t have to be used for “college” in the traditional sense. It may be used for any accredited institution of higher learning, i.e. accredited trade schools, junior colleges, etc. If the money is pulled out and not used for college, then it faces the same penalties as taking money out of an IRA or 401K before retirement, which is a 10% penalty.
