And why not? It's free for them to do so. 

The agent does all the qualifying, the research, the driving, the negotiating, the paperwork and closes the deal.  The agent does this with expectation of receiving payment for their services.  If these agents have most of the buyers, AND most of the work, are you going to refuse to work with them?

The concept is called broker cooperation or broker courtesy.  If a typical commission is 6% , half of that or 3%, is shared with the buyer's agent.  When you, as a "for sale by owner" homeowner, decide to cooperate with buyer's agents, their commission is paid by you at closing.
